Ko Samet Nature Trail: 8km Hike Through Island Paradise

The Ko Samet Nature Trail is a 8.2km loop that I personally love because it offers the perfect balance: a challenging climb through the tropical forest, followed by a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Prao Beach.

Why I recommend this trail

When I visited Ko Samet, part of the Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park established in 1981, I realized that most people stay on the main beaches. This protected area covers 131 km² of land and sea, including Ko Samet and five surrounding islands. But the real soul of the island is in its heights. I spent a few days exploring these paths, and even if the heat is intense, the 360-degree view at the summit made me forget every drop of sweat.

Climbing through the Forest

I started my journey near the Rainbow Sky Hotel. The trail immediately plunges you into a dense forest. What I liked most was the contrast: one minute you are surrounded by exotic birds and tropical plants, and the next, you catch a glimpse of the turquoise sea through the trees.

To close the loop, I headed back toward the east coast. The atmosphere changes completely as you reach the main beaches. It’s the perfect time to grab a fresh coconut and watch the sunset before heading to the food stalls.

Practical Tips for this Hike

• Timing: Start mid-morning to enjoy a long break at Prao Beach and finish at Sai Kaew for the sunset.
• Water: Carry 1 liter. You can easily refill or buy cold drinks when you reach the beaches.
• Navigation: The trail is well-marked, but keep the GPX track handy for the jungle intersections.
• Essentials: Bring mosquito repellent for the forest and a swimsuit for the pristine white-sand stops!
• Gear: Wear sneakers. The terrain is easy, but flip-flops aren’t ideal for the forest climb.

Getting to the Trailhead

The hike starts near the **Rainbow Sky Hotel** in the northern part of Ko Samet. To get there from the main pier (Nadan Pier):

• Walk or Rent a Scooter: From Nadan Pier, it’s about a 10-minute walk or 3-minute scooter ride to the trailhead. Scooter rentals are available near the pier for around 300-400 THB/day.
• Songthaews (Shared Pickups): These blue pickup trucks are Ko Samet’s main transport. Flag one down and ask for “Rainbow Sky Hotel” or “Hat Sai Kaew”. Price: 50-100 THB depending on distance.

You cannot leave Ko Samet without tasting the local street food. After my 8km trek, I headed straight to Mueang Rayong street.

• The “Je” Recommendation: I tried the Pad Thai from a small street vendor there, and it was one of the best I’ve had in Thailand.
• Local Drink: Try the “Cha Yen” (Thai Iced Tea) to cool down after the jungle humidity.
• Safety Tip: Don’t forget your mosquito repellent! The jungle section is beautiful, but the local insects are very friendly.

To be honest, I left Ko Samet with a bit of regret—I wish I could have stayed longer to explore every single hidden cove. This loop is the perfect way to see the island beyond the postcards; it’s a mix of raw effort in the jungle and pure reward on the shore.
